Pre-amps
The preamplifier is the next choice in deciding how to shape your sound.
For a clean sound there is the Universal Audio Solo 110. It was designed by engineer Bill Putnam, a pioneer in recorded music, who worked with Frank Sinatra. This preamp series is famous for superb dynamics and clarity, while still retaining something of the warmth that characterises the vintage Putnam designs. For warmth, the classic Neve 1073, designed by Rupert Neve, another pioneer in the recording industry. Everything about it is classic, the ’’Sound of the 70s’, yet still as relevant today as it was then. |
The Manly TNT’s provide a whole host of of options; “two different and discrete mic pre-amps in one box for two different sonic colours”. This ‘Tube’ or no ‘Tube’ preamp gives you exactly that, an option to use a tube channel based on the Manley Slam, the other ‘cool’ channel is a solid state channel.
Both channels have variable impedance and offer a plethora of sonic options, none more so than the cool channel with both an ‘iron’ control and switchable overdrive effects (60s, 70s).
The API 3124 is another classic, known for its punchy, clean sound. Makes it a perfect fit for drums, guitar, bass & vocals. ‘Punchy sound, with a strong mid range presence'. Used on countless hit records, including contemporary pop classic 24k Magic By Bruno Mars. Mars’ Grammy award winning vocal chain was through an API 3124 - (link)
Our Ward Beck M460 was originally in a full sized console. However this was modded into a standalone unit. Due to the popularity of this model Ward Beck are re-releasing the M460
This is all backed up by a DDA console. Those that are familiar with this predecessor of the Audient might wonder why it is not front and centre to our set-up. It just offers more pre-amps when we need; clean, punchy and transparent.
Everything here is fed through an SPL Madison ADDA converter into Pro Tools. We monitor with a pair of Unity Audio Rocks. These work alongside a 5.1 set-up of Genelec 8030Bs .
